Winter Horseback Riding Adventures
Why Ride in Winter?
While summer rides are about high-mountain vistas and wildflowers, winter riding is an immersive, sensory experience. From the back of a horse, you are elevated above the deep drifts, moving through a landscape of frosted aspens and sleeping willow creek bottoms. It is a connection to the region’s deep-seated ranching heritage—a time when horses weren’t just for recreation, but the only reliable way to navigate the heavy Colorado snow.
Top Horseback Riding Outfitters
Routt County is home to several legendary family-run ranches that offer winter excursions. Most rides last between 1.5 to 2 hours, perfect for a morning adventure before hitting the hot springs.
| Outfitter | Location | Specialty |
| Saddleback Ranch | 15 miles West of Steamboat | A massive 8,000-acre working cattle ranch. Includes hot cocoa and cookies after your ride. |
| Del’s Triangle 3 Ranch | North Routt (Clark) | Led by the family of Olympian Ray Heid; rides through the Mt. Zirkel Wilderness area. |
| Steamboat Lake Outpost | North Routt | Offers a “backcountry” feel near the Continental Divide with stunning views of Hahns Peak. |
What to Expect & How to Prepare
Riding in sub-freezing temperatures requires a different strategy than a summer trot.
The Gear: Think “Ski Wear Plus.” Wear waterproof snow pants (avoiding “swishy” nylon if possible as it can spook some horses, though most trail horses are used to it), a heavy parka, and warm, insulated boots.
Safety First: Most ranches require riders to be at least 8 years old. Helmets are typically required for minors and encouraged for adults.
The Pace: Expect a walk. For the safety of the horse’s joints and to avoid slipping on hidden ice, winter rides are slow and steady—perfect for photography and taking in the views of Mt. Werner and the Sleeping Giant.
Beyond the Saddle: Sleigh Rides
If you prefer to enjoy the scenery with a blanket over your lap, Routt County is famous for its horse-drawn sleigh rides. Many local ranches, including Haymaker Golf Course and Saddleback Ranch, offer “Dinner Sleigh Rides” where a team of draft horses pulls you to a remote lodge for a multi-course western meal.
