Nordic, Cross Country, & Snow Shoeing Adventures

Whether you’re looking to find your flow on a groomed corduroy track or want to break trail through silent aspen groves, Steamboat Springs and Routt County offer some of the finest Nordic terrain in the Rocky Mountains. Known as “Ski Town, USA,” the area’s Olympic heritage extends far beyond the downhill slopes, fostering a world-class cross-country and snowshoeing culture.

The Hubs: Nordic Centers & Groomed Trails

For those who prefer the predictability of groomed tracks, Steamboat boasts several dedicated centers catering to classic skiing, skate skiing, and snowshoeing.

  • Steamboat Ski Touring Center: Located on the rolling hills of the Fish Creek area, this center offers 15km of groomed ski trails and 10km of dedicated snowshoe paths. It’s a local favorite for its cozy lodge and the Picnic Basket Café, perfect for a post-trek homemade soup.

  • Haymaker Nordic Center: Situated on the south end of town, Haymaker provides wide-open vistas of Mount Werner and the Flat Tops. With 10km of mostly flat, beginner-friendly terrain, it’s the ideal spot for those new to the sport or looking for a fast, scenic workout.

  • Howelsen Hill Nordic Center: Right in the heart of downtown, Colorado’s oldest continuously operating ski area features a rigorous and scenic trail system. These trails are famously used by Olympic hopefuls but offer beautiful loops for recreational skiers who don’t mind a few challenging climbs.

  • Lake Catamount Touring Center: About 10 miles south of town, this center offers a “ranch-style” Nordic experience with over 25km of trails winding through meadows and alongside the lake. It’s arguably the most scenic spot in the valley for a long, peaceful glide.

The Wild: Backcountry & Scenic Snowshoeing

If you’re looking to escape the crowds, Routt County’s backcountry is unparalleled.

  • Rabbit Ears Pass: This is the crown jewel of high-altitude touring. With deep snow that lasts well into spring, the “West Summit” loops offer everything from easy meadow meanders to expert-level climbs.

  • Fish Creek Falls: While famous for its summer hiking, the winter transformation is breathtaking. You can snowshoe to the base of the frozen falls or take the Uranium Mine Trail for sweeping views of the canyon and the ski resort across the valley.

  • Emerald Mountain: Accessible directly from downtown, the Blackmere Trail is the go-to for a quick vertical workout with a rewarding panoramic view of the town and the Yampa Valley.

Why Nordic in the ‘Boat?

A Different Pace of Adventure: While the resort is known for “Champagne Powder,” the Nordic trails offer a quiet intimacy with the landscape. It’s a chance to hear the “crunch” of the snow, spot a moose in the willows, and enjoy a workout that engages every muscle in your body.
