ATV & OHV Adventures
Steamboat Springs and the surrounding Routt County are an off-roader’s paradise, offering everything from high-alpine ridgelines and dense pine forests to wide-open desert sagebrush. Whether you’re looking for a technical single-track challenge or a scenic family-style UTV cruise, this corner of Northwest Colorado delivers over 500 miles of marked trails.
Top OHV Trail Systems
1. Hahns Peak / North Routt (The Crown Jewel)
Located about 30 miles north of Steamboat, this is the area’s premier OHV destination. It features a massive network of interconnected trails ranging from beginner to expert.
Farwell Mountain: Offers an easier ATV trail with gradual climbs through meadows and pine forests.
Ellis Jeep Trail: A popular 14-mile route that offers spectacular views of the Zirkel Wilderness and several challenging “wet” sections.
Nipple Peak & Prospector: More technical options with tight turns, roots, and rocks for those seeking a bit of a thrill.
2. Buffalo Pass (The Local Favorite)
Just minutes from downtown Steamboat, “Buff Pass” provides quick access to high-elevation riding.
The Ride: Expect smooth dirt roads at the bottom that transition into rocky, washboard terrain as you climb toward the Continental Divide.
The Reward: Incredible 360-degree views overlooking the Yampa Valley and the Mount Zirkel Wilderness.
3. Rabbit Ears Pass
Known for its iconic rock formations, the Rabbit Ears area offers a classic network of rough dirt roads and double-track trails perfect for exploring the high country without the extreme technicality of North Routt.
4. Sand Wash Basin (High Desert Adventure)
For a change of pace, head west toward Maybell. This BLM-managed area offers a vast, open landscape of desert trails. It is one of the best places in the state to spot wild horses while you ride.
Rentals & Tours
If you didn’t bring your own rig, Steamboat has several high-end outfitters that offer “ride-from-the-shop” access:
Hahns Peak Adventure Rentals: Located in Clark (North Routt), they offer self-guided Polaris RZR rentals with pre-loaded GPS routes so you can explore the 500+ miles of trails without a guide.
Colorado Sled Rentals / Steamboat ATV: Offers full-day Polaris RZR and ATV adventures on Buffalo Pass and in North Routt.
Del’s Triangle 3 Ranch: Provides guided UTV buggy tours through the Routt National Forest—ideal for families looking for a structured, scenic experience.
Know Before You Go (2026 Regulations)
Registration: All OHVs (ATVs, UTVs, Dirt Bikes) must display a current Colorado OHV registration (for residents) or a Colorado OHV Use Permit (for non-residents). These are valid from April 1 to March 31.
Equipment: Your vehicle must have a functional muffler and a U.S. Forest Service-approved spark arrestor.
Age Limits: Operators under 16 must be under the direct supervision of a licensed driver. Some rental companies require drivers to be 21 or 25 years old.
The “Stay the Trail” Rule: Always stay on designated routes shown on the official Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM). Steamboat’s ecosystem is fragile; going off-trail can lead to permanent closures.
- MVUM Maps: The Forest Service “Motor Vehicle Use Map” is the only legal authority on where you can ride. You can download the Hahn’s Peak/Bears Ears District and Yampa Ranger District maps for free on the Avenza Maos app.
ATV & OHV Trails
Motor vehicle travel is allowed only on designated trails and roads on the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests.
North Routt (Hahn’s Peak Area): This is the most popular OHV destination in the county. It features high-alpine terrain, meadows, and technical single-track or double-track options.
Rabbit Ears Pass & Buffalo Pass: Located east & southeast of Steamboat Springs, these areas provide incredible views but have specific motorized vs. non-motorized designations.
South Routt & Flat Tops Area (County Road 8): Heading south toward Yampa, the terrain transitions into the massive Flat Tops Plateau.
