Book 1: The Mystery of the Sand Wash Stallion

The Setup

The adventure begins on a dusty summer morning at the Wyman Living History Museum. Carolyn King and Dandy Da Dog are helping out with the chores when they overhear a group of hikers talking about a “ghost horse” spotted near the Sand Wash Basin. Local legends say it’s a rare, silver-maned mustang that hasn’t been seen in decades.

The Conflict

Driven by her love for animals and her adventurous spirit, Carolyn decides they need to see if the legend is true. Armed with a canteen, a map of the high desert, and Dandy’s keen nose, the duo sets off into the rugged terrain.

However, the high desert isn’t easy to navigate. Carolyn and Dandy must face:

The Summer Heat: Realizing that water is more precious than gold in the basin.
A Wrong Turn: Getting momentarily lost among the junipers and draws.
The “Scout”: A protective lead stallion who isn’t sure he wants Carolyn and Dandy invading his territory.

The Turning Point

While resting near a hidden watering hole, Dandy starts barking at a trapped foal stuck in a muddy embankment. Carolyn has to use her “Western Grit”—and a little bit of rope-handling skill she learned at the Ride ‘n Tie Days—to help the young horse get free. Just as the foal is reunited with its mother, the “Ghost Stallion” appears on a ridge, silhouetted against the sunset, giving Carolyn a nod of silent thanks.

The Lesson

Carolyn learns that being a “Wild Explorer” isn’t just about seeing cool things; it’s about protecting the wild and knowing when to watch from a distance. She returns to Craig with a secret she’ll keep forever: some legends are real, but they belong to the land, not to people.

The Setting

Winter has arrived, and the Yampa Valley is buried under a thick blanket of “Champagne Powder.” Carolyn and Dandy head east to Steamboat Springs for the world-famous Winter Carnival. The town is buzzing with excitement, and the smell of woodsmoke and hot cocoa fills the air.

The Mystery

The highlight of the Carnival is the Lighted Man—a skier covered in hundreds of glowing lights who swoops down Howelsen Hill. But on the morning of the big show, the special “Star Crystal” that powers the Lighted Man’s backpack goes missing! Without it, the tradition might be cancelled for the first time in history.

The Adventure

Carolyn suspects the crystal wasn’t stolen, but accidentally lost during a practice run on the Strawberry Park trails. She and Dandy strap on their snowshoes and head into the aspen groves.

The Deep Snow: Dandy keeps disappearing into the powder, only his wagging tail sticking out like a furry snorkel!
The Clues: They find a trail of glittery dust leading toward the Fish Creek Falls.
The Heroic Moment: They discover the crystal snagged on a low-hanging pine branch, guarded by a very curious (and very confused) Gray Jay.

The Grand Finale

Carolyn and Dandy make it back to Lincoln Avenue just in time for the parade. They get a front-row seat as the horses pull skiers down the snow-covered street, and the Lighted Man shines brighter than ever before.

📖 The Story Overview

While exploring the banks of the beautiful White River, Carolyn and Dandy find themselves tracking clues left behind across millennia. First, Dandy discovers a wall of breathtaking Fremont petroglyphs—ancient rock art carved over a thousand years ago, depicting mysterious “lizard-men” and swirling patterns.

But the real mystery deepens when Dandy sniffs out something much bigger embedded right into a crumbling sandstone cliff: a massive row of razor-sharp, fossilized teeth. These don’t belong to any ordinary land dinosaur. Carolyn realizes they’ve stumbled upon a Mosasaur—a terrifying, 50-foot prehistoric marine reptile that ruled the ancient, salty ocean covering Colorado 70 million years ago!

With the spring snowmelt causing the White River to rise rapidly, the fragile fossil is in danger of being washed away forever. It’s up to Carolyn, Dandy, and a healthy dose of Western Grit to carefully excavate the “River Dragon’s” tooth and deliver it safely to the Rangely Outdoor Museum before time runs out!
